This is a graphite pencil portrait I completed for my portfolio. It came out really well and I am going to be doing a few more pieces. I worked on this for awhile running the progress pass coworkers and classmates who were all complimentary of the results. I will be doing commissioned portraits of people and animals in the future and I am in the process of building up a repertoire of work for my portfolio. This is the beginning of many more to come. The reference imagery for this drawing came from morguefile.
The reference image.

She's lovely! You've given the portrait even a little more personality than the photograph has, which is something I delight in doing...Her mouth has a bit more of an "Oh!" look to it, like she's looking at something fascinating, and you did it all with the shading...good job!
Thanks Deb! I realized when I was finished she had a bit of a fascinated look on her face that wasn't captured in the photo.
My method of shading is the same as it is with the cats. This was completed on 90 lb watercolor paper so not as much tooth as my kitty drawings but enough to retain an interesting texture.
I don't blend with my fingers or tortillions, I use pencil pressure to shade and a kneaded eraser for highlights. My fiance was like, how did you get the shading to look so smooth? Hours of hours of layers in a back and forth/circular motion lol. I could afford to go darker in the shadows on her face however she has a sensitive appearance I do not want to disturb.
